WHAT IS THE PROJECT? more...

The Convention Center Complex is currently proposing a $38 million partial restoration project to address the most critical needs of the 35 year old Community Center Theater. The facility fee is the first phase of the restoration funding.

City Council has asked that the following items be assessed:

  • Update the mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems to improve energy efficiency and meet current codes.
  • Provide ADA accessibility to front of house seating.
  • Add ADA accessible restrooms.
  • Refurbish patron seats, paint and carpet.
  • Add a permanent covered patio on west end of the lobby overlooking 13th Street.
  • Improve sound and lighting technical systems.
  • Provide ADA accessible Box Office windows.
  • Improve and moderately expand lobby and concession areas.

WHY SHOULD WE DO THE PROJECT? more...

Building Systems Replacements – The Community Center Theater opened in 1974. At the time, the facility was considered ‘state of the art’. While becoming an integral part of the City’s entertainment and cultural district, the building has not had any major mechanical or theatrical system upgrades since it opened. Life safety system requirements have become more stringent. Replacing dated HVAC and lighting systems with innovative efficient systems, may be an option that can increase patron comfort and reduce the cost of energy.

ADA Improvements – In 1974, ADA accessibility was a relatively new concept. Currently, staff is working with the City of Sacramento’s ADA coordinators to identify possible methods for access to front of house seating, additional ADA restrooms, and accessibility issues at the Box Office ticket windows.

Technical / Back of House – Large touring production and popular entertainers typically carry and install their own sound, video and lighting systems. Along with local and regional producers, they expect to have multiple technologies available in the spaces they rent. These technologies may include multi-channel surround sound systems, provisions for video projection, video recording, as well as an infrastructure of wire management to allow touring shows to easily install their own equipment.

Lobby and Patio Upgrades – Increased lobby and concession areas may offer marketing opportunities, as well as unique special event space. A proposed new exterior lighting plan would highlight a new outdoor covered patio and sculpture garden.
